Chapter Nine

Back in Aaron’s bedroom, Steve was sitting on a chair next to his bed while Aaron lay down on it.

“Are you just going to think about the problem, or it is possible for me to help you?” Aaron asked.

“I’m sorry. I just have a lot on my mind tonight.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I just don’t feel like doing pre-calculus tonight, that’s all,” Steve replied.

“You said something was on your mind. Would you like to talk about it?”

“Do you know what today is?”

“What?”

“My father’s birthday.” Steve stood up from the chair and walked over to the opposite side of Aaron’s room where there was a giant, black bean bag and sat down on it.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“No one knows except for my mom and me.”

“Did you guys do anything in memory of him?”

“Are you kidding?” he scoffed bitterly. “My mom acts like he was never alive.”

“Why?”

“She’s had about twenty boyfriends since his death. I think she’s forgotten whose birthdays are when.”

“I don’t think she has,” Aaron replied. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she was at home sulking right now.”

“I don’t think you know my mom very well. She brought a date to my dad’s funeral.”

Aaron stared at him, incredulous. “You’re kidding.”

“I wish I was.”

“Well, do you want to do something?”

“What?”

“I have an idea.” Aaron hurriedly left the room.

“What are you going to do?”

“You’ll see,” he called from the staircase on his way down.

A few minutes later, Aaron reappeared. He was holding three cupcakes, one birthday candle and matches.

“What’s all that?”

“Isn’t it someone’s birthday?”

“Yeah, it is.”

Aaron handed Steve the candles and a match.

“All right, put the candle in a cupcake and light it.”

Steve took the cupcake, put the candle in it and lit it.

“Now make a wish, and blow it out.”

“But, it’s not my birthday.”

“I know that, but just do it for your father.”

Steve closed his eyes, then paused. “All right. Dad, if you can hear me, I have only one wish. It’s what I wished for you every day you were alive. I wished that you could be happy. You always seemed so miserable when you were with Mom and me. So, the only wish I can give you is that you can be happy wherever you are. I miss you, Dad. I really miss you.” Steve opened his eyes, smiled and looked at Aaron. “Thank you.”

“Wait, one last thing. I have a present for him, too. One that you can keep for him. All right?”

“All right.”

Aaron walked over to his dresser and opened the top drawer. He pulled out a baseball, and then tossed it to Steve.

“What’s this?”

“Remember the ball you hit over the fence?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, I went to the farm and into the barn and found it.”

Steve was very surprised. “Really! When were you able to do that?”

“Remember the day you hit the home run? Well, after you left my house, I went over to the barn on my brother’s scooter and found it.”

“How were able to do that? There are weeds are sky-high in there.”

“I brought a flashlight.”

“I can’t believe this.
